Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI)

Analysis Grid for Elements Linked to Obesity (ANGELO)
A planning process developed in the South Pacific to categorize the various components of the obesogenic environment (See Swinburn Prev Med 1999)

Capacity Building
A process to increase the skills, infrastructure, development, partnerships/relationships and resources of individuals, organizations, and/or communities (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/cba/)

Champions of the community
Individuals who are influential within a community, organization, and/or government who can create vital visions and aspirations that inspire people to make changes and can open the doors to decision-makers and pave the way for progress (See Swinburn Pac Health Dialog 2007)

Children’s Healthy Living Program for Remote Underserved Minority Populations in the Pacific Region (CHL)
USDA funded program aimed at building a social, cultural, political, economic, and physical environment in the Pacific Region that supports active play and eating healthy food, in order to promote health in children 2-5 years

CHL Coordinating Center (CCC)
Responsible for coordinating the administration and  management of the CHL project

Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR)
A joint effort that involves researchers and community representatives in all phases of the research process; engages community members, employs local knowledge in the understanding of health problems and the design of interventions, and invests community members in the processes and products of research; the collaborative is invested in the dissemination and use of research findings to improve community health and reduce health disparities

Coordinated Agricultural Program (CAP)
A type of National Research Initiative (NRI) award that supports large-scale multimillion dollar projects to promote collaboration, open communication, and the exchange of information; reduce duplication of effort; and coordinate activities among individuals, institutions, states, and regions (http://www.csrees.usda.gov/about/glossary.html)

Culturally Centered
A dynamic continuum of awareness of culture, acquisition of knowledge about cultural aspects (norms, customs, language, lifestyle, etc.), and the capacity to integrate these aspects (Bernal J Community Psychol 2006)

Culturally Sensitive

Evidenced-based
An approach that uses evidence published in peer reviewed literature and the most appropriate information available to make decisions; it involves complex and conscientious decision making based not only on available evidence but on the known demographics/characteristics

Food and Agriculture Science Enhancement (FASE) and Experimental Program for Stimulating Competitive Research Program
Grants designed to help institutions develop competitive research, education and extension/outreach programs in high-priority areas of national need in agriculture, food, and environmental sciences

Food Cost Survey (FCS)
Survey of food price observations and observations of fuel, heating oil, propane, electricity and lumber prices; since 1984 the University of Alaska Cooperative Extension has maintained an ongoing database of quarterly food costs observations across the state

Freely Associated States (FAS)
Union of the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau and Republic of the Marshall Islands under the Compact of Free Association

Health
Good health enables a productive and fulfilling life. Health includes mental, physical, spiritual, and environmental aspects to which obesity is a threat (developed in consensus by the CHL team)

Healthy Living in the Pacific Islands Initiative (HLPI)
A USDA funded initiative that linked Land Grant Colleges in the US Affiliated Pacific in nutrition and health priority setting and implementation through a stakeholder driven process

Integrated

Intervention

Land Grant

Local Advisory Committees (LAC)
To advise CHIL program personnel on local strategic opportunities and partnerships that will have a sustainable impact on the prevention of child obesity and overall improved child health

National Institute of Food and Agriculture
An agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) created through the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008. NIFA’s unique mission is to advance knowledge for agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being, and communities by supporting research, education, and extension programs in the Land-Grant University System and other partner organizations (http://www.csrees.usda.gov/about/background.html)

Pacific Land Grant Alliance (PLGA)
Alliance sprouted from ADAP between American Samoa Community College, College of Micronesia, Northern Marianas College, University of Guam, University of Alaska Fairbanks and University of Hawaii

Pacific Tracker (PacTrac)
A dietary and physical activity assessment program modified from the  Interactive Healthy Eating Index (IHEI) and based on MyPyramid developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion that can be used to evaluate dietary and physical activity data of Pacific Island communities (http://hawaiifoods.hawaii.edu/pactrac.asp)

Physical Activity (PA)
Any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscles that increases energy expenditure above a basal level; physical activity is a means of enhancing health (http://www.who.int/topics/physical_activity/en/)

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
